WHERE DID THE MILE ORIGINATE?

The modern mile originated in Roman antiquity. The term “mile” originated from the Latin mille passus, or “a thousand paces,” which measured 5,000 Roman feet. A Roman pace equaled 5 Roman feet, so a thousand paces equaled 5,000 feet.  Romans had smaller feet than modern-day humans, so 5,000 roman feet is equal to 4,800 modern feet.

WHY ARE THERE  5,280 FEET IN A MILE?

In 1592, The British Parliament wanted to standardize the measurement of the mile and made the decision that it should be equal to eight furlongs. Furlongs, which are still used as a unit of measurement in horse racing, are 660 feet long. 660 feet multiplied by eight gives us the current length of a mile at 5,280 feet.
